Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment wherein the patient breathes 100% pure oxygen while in a pressurized hyperbaric chamber. Used to treat a wide variety of dysfunctions, injuries and diseases, HBOT utilizes this increased pressure to deliver oxygen much more effectively than can be achieved under normal conditions. This extra oxygen speeds up and enhances the body’s natural ability to heal. Long used to treat divers with decompression sickness, HBOT is now gaining international recognition as one of the safest and most dynamic therapies available for numerous medical conditions.
The principles behind HBOT’s effectiveness lie in its ability to greatly increase the oxygen transport capacity of the blood. Under normal atmospheric pressure, oxygen transport is limited by the oxygen binding capacity of hemoglobin in red blood cells and very little oxygen is transported by blood plasma. Since the hemoglobin of the red blood cells is nearly saturated with oxygen under normal atmospheric pressure, this route of transport cannot be exploited any further. Oxygen transport by plasma, however, is significantly increased by the use of HBOT. This heightened O2 carrying capacity creates much more favourable conditions for oxygen diffusion from functioning capillaries to damaged tissue sites.
